Schools Programs

Sprinter and Friends, running since 2003, has been developed in consultation with teachers and education providers. Aimed at Prep, grade one and two students, the program aims to increase students’ safety awareness and understanding of how to identify and minimise risks, what to do in a medical emergency, and when and how to call for an ambulance. This program comprises a teachers resource kit, a school visit by a qualified and experienced paramedic and family activity packs for each participating student.

The visit comprises 3 sections:

• A one hour exciting and interactive demonstration by the paramedic utilising student volunteers
• Small group role-playing sessions to allow each child to practice new skills
• Small group tours of the ambulance

The teachers resource kit:

Resources within the pack include worksheets, pictures and activities which can then be photocopied and distributed as the teacher wishes. The worksheets focus heavily on our five key messages:

• STOP, THINK AND STAY SAFE to identify and avoid hazards
• SHOUT AND SQUEEZE to identify an unconscious person
• ASK FOR HELP from an adult
• CALL triple zero (000) in an Emergency and
• When calling triple zero (000) DON’T HANG UP!

The family pack:

Contains a letter to parents and a series of activity sheets for parents and children to complete together. The pack also contains information for parents on ambulance membership, first aid courses and helpful information in preparation for a medical emergency.

Cost:

Costs for the presentation are $3.00 per student with a minimum charge of $150.00 and maximum number of 50 Preps or 60 grade one or two students.
